Was I ever glad to be safe and warm last night! Outside the weather was wild, with the rain smashing down and the wind howling. There was more than a few people late for work today as trees were down all over the place and the only road into town was blocked for several hours. I knew this had probably dashed any chance of my shoes arriving today, but I sauntered down to the visitor centre to check. After getting the crushing (but expected news) that my shoes were not there, I arranged for them to be forwarded back home when they did eventually turn up. I picked up some Shoe Glue from the supermarket and did my best to repair my torn trainers. I used some tape as a foundation to layer on gobs of glue over the huge tears. Hopefully it will hold, or I’ll be walking the rest of the way in my sandals.
Apart from that, I took it very easy today and spent a good deal of time in the common room of the hostel, were the fire was roaring and it was warm and comfortable. I grabbed some pizza from Flaming Hot Takeaway and it was delicious, but I had to force myself to eat half of the thing, it was huge. The rest will be breakfast and dinner tomorrow.
I did check in with the local parks and wildlife office as there were rumours of a diversion in place up the trail. Turns out Sappers bridge is under water, which they confirmed, so there will be some highway walking in my future. My feet are already throbbing at the thought.
