Colorado Trail 5 – Catch 22

It was a struggle getting up this morning. A real struggle. I normally like to be away by 7am at the latest, but I was still snug in my quilt when 7 came around. I eventually crawled out of bed and got started packing up camp.

It was good timing, as just then a bull Moose came up for a visit. It was a little too far for me to get a picture, but man it was huge! I hope to see a few more before the trip is done.

I had about 17 miles to Kenosha pass, but given my slow start, I knew I was unlikely to make that today. I was tired, despite the 11 hours of sleep I’d had last night, I had no appetite, and the altitude was giving me a bit of nausea. I was having a good retch every hour or so, thankfully I wasn’t bringing up any water or anything, but it still sucked.

So I needed to eat, you know for fuel, but I was nauseous and the thought of eating gave me the boak. So then I struggled because I had no energy. So I needed to eat…

The walking was tough, but again it was gorgeous. Most of the time the trail left the trees walking along the sides of exposed hills, which made for awesome views. It also made for sunburn if I wasn’t careful. The sun at this altitude was no joke, it was super easy to burn without even realising it.

Late in the afternoon I came across some cowboys going the other way. I was jealous of their horses. They were nice gents, and well traveled to. They had seen more of Australia than I had.

As the sun was beginning to set I called it a day about 4 miles from Kenosha pass and set up camp. The clouds looked ominous and I wanted to be snug in my tent long before the rain started. The mosquitoes were crazy, but I was too tired to care. They also don’t drive me as mad as the Australian mozzies, so that was a plus I guess. Still annoying though.

I went to sleep dreaming of lemonade. Tomorrow was town day!
