Colorado trail update 1

I will be doing proper blog posts soon. I’m just…tired right now.

I’ve completed 70 miles of the Colorado trail in very hot conditions. The heat, lack of water and the altitude have kicked my butt a fair bit. I’m taking a rest day today and will skip ahead 30 miles to Breckenridge. I lost my water filter, and I really can’t go on without a new one (some of the water sources are pretty dodgy) and the weather is a bit cooler south of Breckenridge.

I don’t have any headaches from the altitude, but do have a bit of nausea and fatigue. That should come good in a few days, I hope. I have next to no appetite though. Apparently this is normal when you go above 5000 feet (they have actually done some weigh loss studies in it) This is not ideal when you need to eat to fuel your hike. But I also can’t force eat, because nausea…

I am currently sitting in the Treeline Hostel in Alma (10,361 feet), a little town just outside of Fairplay (formerly known as South Park, yes, that one). This is what I love about hiking, I go to towns I otherwise would never have seen and meet lots of cool folk.

I will jump on a bus to Breckenridge in a couple of hours, and then I’ll be back to the trail tomorrow.

Oh, I got a trail name! “Timex”. Jennifer, one of the hikers I met on day one gave it to me on day three. She said it was because “I can take a licking and still keep ticking” it used to be an old ad they ran for Timex watches.

I kinda like it, feels like I’ve earned it.
